The AIA Practical Weekend introduces delegates to the relict metal mining landscapes of Derbyshire, both above and below ground, led by John Barnatt, an archaeologist who has surveyed such landscapes during his career in the Peak District. The weekend will foster greater understanding of the need both to interpret and protect such landscapes for future generations.

The weekend will include a visit to the splendid Peak District Lead Mining Museum in Matlock Bath and its adjacent Temple Mine; the surface remains of Magpie Mine, run by the Peak District Mines Historical Society; and an exploration of other mining landscapes in the area, with an underground visit to one of the local caverns which were exploited for minerals including the famous Blue John
